The GRE stands for Graduate Record Exam. Most students attempt GRE for getting their Master’s degree as well as for registration to PhD program in US, UK, Canada graduate schools.
GRE is divided into two partsGeneral and Subject Test. The General test is a multiple choice one and covers questions to measure your verbal, analytical and simple quantitative abilities. It is not related to any particular subject area and hence is general in nature. Many graduate colleges require only the General Test score.  General Test is administered through out a year as computer based or paper based test. In US, Canada and many other countries it is taken as computer based only.

The General test  consists of two verbal reasoning sections of 30 minutes each, two quantitative reasoning sections of 30 minutes each, two analytical writing tests again for 30 minutes each and one experimental section of 30 minutes.  So in total there are 7 sections in the GRE General test. In the Analytical Writing section you would be required to write essays on two types of topics – analyzing an issue and analyzing an argument.

Important points to note for GRE General test are- Questions range from easy to difficult types. So there is no meaning in wasting time to attempt initial few questions as tough ones will be waiting for you at the end. More so, if you leave a question without answering, you cannot come back to answer it later. There is no negative marking, hence in case of doubt you can go for a guess work too. Usually you would need a score of 550 or more for your verbal section and about 600 or more in your quantitative section. But it is better to cross check with your respective colleges for their requirements.
