A cosmetologist is a professional who has earned the license to conduct various beauty treatments including skin and hair services.

All spas, nail salons and hair salons employ qualified cosmetologists to perform many beauty services. Some cosmetologists also prefer opening their own spas and salons.

If you are a creative person the profession of a cosmetologist is ideal for you. This is important since your clients will look up to you to come up with new hairstyles or make up trends. Also you should be a people person. You will have to deal with people from all walks of life on a daily basis. You should have the stamina to interact with various personalities all in a day’s work.

Get yourself enrolled in a beauty school. You can check the internet for a list of the beauty colleges in the United States. Some beauty schools are even affiliated with local colleges. There are also private beauty colleges which can be a tad expensive though they are extremely professional.

You will need to complete the required number of hours in the beauty college. Each state requires different number of hours. The state of California requires one to complete 1,600 hours of in-school activity. Only then can you apply for a license and get your certificate. In New York 1,000 hours of school attendance is mandatory.

During these hours it is important that you complete the required number of tasks like facials, hair styling, pedicures, manicures etc. Like then number of in-school activity hours, the number and kind of services also differs from state to state.

If you want to work in a salon or open your own beauty clinic you need to be licensed. Only licensed cosmetologists are allowed to practice. Apply for a working license once your course is about to get over. Send your application for a license to the state licensing board seeking permission to take the cosmetology licensing test.

Each state has a different test pattern. you can be asked to perform various tasks like cutting or styling hair or even pedicures and manicures. The task will be related to hair, skin or nail services. If you clear the task you will obtain a cosmetologist’s license and can be employed as a professional in any spa or salon. Start looking for a job in your vicinity. You may start as an assistant to an already established cosmetologist.
