High school students planning to go for higher studies need to take the national entrance examinations. There are two types of national examinations- ACT and SAT. You either need to take one of these or both of these for your further studies.  To know whether a student is fit for higher studies, the College Board takes into account the score obtained in the entrance exam , your GPA (grade point average) or recommendation letters etc.

Other common subject-wise entrance examinations include GRE, GMAT, MCAT, LSAT and TOEFL. These tests can be taken as per your convenient time and place. Also,  these exams can be attempted more than once after paying the requisite fee.  The results are sent directly to the respective colleges of application, with a copy to you too.

ACT – America College Test: One of the national entrance exams which is required for getting admission to undergraduate programs. The test is taken in the field of english, mathematics, reading abilities, and science reasoning.
SAT – Scholastic Aptitude Test:  SAT which is very similar to the ACT. This is also required for undergraduate programs. The test has two parts – Part I is a test of reasoning (verbal & quantitative) which is of 3 hours duration. Part II is the test for assessing subject matter knowledge for a duration of 1 hour. Both Part I and Part II are multiple choice types.

GRE – Graduate Record Exam: Is the most common test for admission to graduate courses and research studies. It consists of a general test (verbal quantitative and analytical reasoning), subject test and english language assessment.

GMAT – General Management Aptitude Test: Is a test required for admission to management courses. It consists of test for verbal reasoning, quantitative and english language.

MCAT- Medical College Admission Test: This test is required for admission to medical studies. This is a multiple-choice exam. It consists of questions related to problem solving, english language skills and concepts related to general science & biological science.
LSAT – Law School Admission Test: This test is required for admission to law programs. It consists of reading and verbal reasoning skills. The test is conducted four times a year around the world.

TOEFL – Test Of English as a Foreign Language: Students coming from other countries and aspiring to study in USA need to take TOEFL as part of their admission requirements. This is an english language test only.
