TOEFL test stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language. This test is mandatory in more than 130 countries for admission to more than 7000 colleges. The test is administered at more than 4500 test centers across the world.

Why TOEFL is important and so popular: In order to get admission to any college across the globe, you need to demonstrate your english speaking capabilities, which is the global language. In order to do so, TOEFL is needed especially for getting admission to top colleges in US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The test can be taken more or less at your convenience and attempted any number of times.



You can register for TOEFL in many ways – using online means, phone, and e-mail or in person. Online registration can be done 24/7 with payment accepted using the following credit/debit cards- American Express, Master Card, Visa Card, Discover, JCB. You can also use e-check if you have a bank account in US. You cannot register 7 days before a test date.  Sometimes late registration is allowed up to 3 days before the test date, only by paying a late registration fee. Some countries like Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Benin, Togo, and Cameroon do not accept American express, Discover, JCB, Master card and e-check facilities. The acceptable currencies are dollars (US, Canada, Australia, Singapore, New Zealand and Hong Kong), British Pound, Japanese Yen, Kroner (Swedish, Norwegian & Danish) and Swiss Franc only.

The test can be taken in two ways – paper based test and internet based test. Some countries accept only paper based and some internet based and some both. TOEFL tests you english language capabilities especially in reading, listening, writing and speaking the language. The test has 3 sections for listening comprehension, structure and written expression and reading comprehension. Also a 30 minute test of written english in one particular topic is taken.

For mail based registration, your application should be received at the office atleast 4 weeks before the test date.
After successful registration, get the registration number and on the day of the test, bring a valid identification which should have your name, signature and photo. There is nothing better than a valid passport as an ID card. Make sure you bring along all the documents which include the original ID Card (not its Photostat copy) and everything in the ID should be written in english only. Apart from the ID card, you cannot bring any other item in the test hall, like your mobile, calculator etc. Expired ID cards, birth certificates, international driver’s license, social security card, employee ID card etc are not accepted as ID proof.

In case test is rescheduled due to reasons beyond your control (weather problems etc) and your test gets cancelled, you can ask for refund or attempt another test for free. Refund including your travel expenses in US dollars will be given to you once you submit a request for refund. In case of reschedule due to your request, you may need to pay an extra fee of US$60. Request for rescheduling your test can be done online, in person or by phone only.


There are special provisions provided for students with disabilities, like granting extended time, omitting certain test sections etc. The test does not have negative marking and there is no pass or fail score.
