Role & Job Description of an Environmental Engineer
An environmental engineer designs solutions and systems to counter environmental problems arising out of industrial waste, toxic gases emanated from industries, waste water generated from chemical and dye plants, etc. The most important responsibility of an environmental engineer is to come up with sustainable waste management and waste disposal methods in the context of a large industrial set-up. Another challenging task that an environmental engineer would face is the recycling of industrial waste in a way such that it is beneficial to the environment.
The primary role of environmental engineers is to carry out hazardous-waste management studies to evaluate the potential dangers of such toxic wastes, advise and design solutions for treatment and containment, and develop regulations to prevent mishaps in accordance with the laws of Environmental Engineering. Many a times environmental engineers also design public water supply systems and industrial wastewater treatment units.
Environmental Engineers are typically recruited by consulting firms that specialize in waste management and pollution control. Large chemical plants, petrochemical plants, dye units, etc also require environmental to design effective systems to treat their air or wastewater discharges. Government units dealing with the supply of water and those that monitor air and water quality also require the specialized knowledge of environmental engineers.
