The job entails to overlook the filling of the forms with right information and storing the details in a computer database, which help them with statistical analysis, provide information for conducting research etc. They group patients by diagnosis, assigning codes to different diagnosis and medical procedure.

The work responsibility varies depending on the strength and size of the hospital. A large set up may require a technician for each department of the hospital whereas a small hospital or clinic requires technician to manage the entire records department. The job may require them to work at odd hours as the records department is open all the time.

Educational requirement and certification:
Associate degree is essential to pursue as medical records and health information technician. They can advance further with Bachelors or Master’s degree and land job as health information manager. Continuing education is essential in this field.

Certification from The American Health Information management Association (AHIMA) increases the earning potential; create more opportunities for career advancement. Different credentials are offered for certification such as registered health information technician (RHIT),certified coding specialist (CCS),certified health data analyst(CHDA),certified coding associate (CCA) ,registered health information administrator (RHIA) etc.

To obtain credentials they have pass the accredited program from the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Health Management Education (CAHIIM) and pass the exam conducted by AHIMA. Specialty coding credentials are administered by The American Academy of professional coders (AAPC); for example one can be a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) or go in for different specialties.
