The art of drawing blood from the veins is known as Phlebotomy. Those who draw blood are known as Phlebotomists and they are experts in extraction of blood for the purpose of tests or blood transfusion.

If you want to pursue a career in Phlebotomy, then you must have a degree from an accredited phlebotomy school or university. There are a number of online programs which provides the required training for a career in Phlebotomy. Associate degrees in Phlebotomy can take up to 18 months to complete but bachelor’s degree programs can take longer duration.

The online school programs in phlebotomy have some specialized areas like anatomy, physiology and phlebotomy techniques. Special focus is given on communication skills so that you learn how to relax the patients and draw blood by keeping the patient in a relaxed position. Practical training will be given to students so that they learn how to drawn blood from the veins of the patients. An experience in a laboratory will help to improve your skills.

Phlebotomists generally work in medical offices and clinics. They generally help the doctors and the nurses by collecting the blood samples. Phlebotomists are often seen working in hospitals and blood donation campaigns. Preparing the samples and collecting the urine is also part of the job. A well recognized phlebotomy program will include all these aspects of the job so that the pass out candidate becomes a good phlebotomist and makes a mark in his career.

The training program for the phlebotomists includes an internship in a clinic. The candidate must obtain a certificate in CPR or cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The candidates are also taught detailed anatomy, physiology, blood and body fluid collection techniques.

Phlebotomy colleges and Universities are suddenly experiencing a surge in popularity. There many programs that grant baccalaureate and it takes up to four years of training.

There are several tests administered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology or ASCP, the American Medical Technologists’ and American Association of Medical Staff. After clearing all these tests, a candidate can get a Phlebotomy Certificate. However, in order to get a job as a Phlebotomy in US, these certificates are not that compulsory with the sole exception of the states of California and Louisiana.

A certified Phlebotomy can draw blood from humans and animals and there are many places where they can work like hospitals, clinics and blood banks. In early days, the job of a Phlebotomist did not have much support and not many candidates enrolled for training programs in phlebotomy. But times have changes.

The demand for trained Phlebotomists is growing day by day and this is a golden period for the prospective candidates. A number of colleges and universities have launched degree programs in Phlebotomy and the most encouraging trend is that many students have started enquiring about these courses.

The online programs are much in demand as they can be completed more comfortably and with time in hand. These courses are also cheaper than the regular courses. So this makes the online phlebotomy programs more attractive to the future students.
