Study at Santa Monica College

Santa Monica College is two year public community college. The college is often referred as SMC in its shortened name form and its nickname is Corsairs.

Located in Santa Monica, California; it was founded in the year 1929. Starting with just 153 students in the first batch, today it has more than 30,000 students enrolled to it.



Out of all these students, as many as 3,000 students come from foreign countries. They represent around 100 nationalities. That way, it has the largest international student community for any community college in the United States. These students are enrolled to around 90 study streams.

The college maintains high standard in the courses offered here. It gets evident from the fact that among all the community colleges in California it boasts of the maximum number of students who get transferred to four year University education system. Usually, they go to University of California, University of Southern California and Loyola Marymount University.

The college also offers transfer classes in some specific subjects that include journalism, business administration, computer science, liberal arts, health sciences and fine arts. At the same time, students can choose from a number of occupational certificate programs. These certificate programs include subjects like fashion design, office information systems, the academy of entertainment technology and accounting. The academic process over here is very flexible and accommodating.


There is a specific Arts Mentor program that is meant for the students who do not fit into the limits of the traditional curriculum. This program is meant to provide graduate level training to students in the field of fine and applied arts, by the professionals of the field. All these things provide a lot of space for students to grow. The college also offers its students ample exposure to sports along with academics.

There are 7 men’s team and 9 women’s team over there. Both the men’s and women’s teams field in the sporting events of cross country, track and field, volleyball, basketball and water polo. Mascot of the college is Pico the Corsair.

The Santa Monica College is spread over an area of 38-acres and its current president is Chui Tsang.
