There are many professional bodies which aim to bring together the best minds, especially in the field of research, from the various fields of engineering (with special emphasis on electrical and electronics engineering).
But there is probably no such body which is as important, popular and respected as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc (IEEE). The IEEE is the world’s largest scientific society. It has its presence in 130 countries. The member count stands at around 300,000 worldwide. That’s one huge society!
Even though the IEEE primarily deals with electrical, electronics and computer engineering, it has diversified into various other fields of engineering as well. It mainly aims to advance research and development of new technologies in the various fields, with an over all progress of the world in mind. In this regard, the IEEE gives equal importance to both theory and practice.
Some of the activities of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers are holding close to 4,000 conferences and meetings worldwide every year, publishing a whopping 23 % of the entire world’s literature (in the form of technical and scientific papers) in the fields of electrical, electronics and computer engineering, providing a number of educational programs, providing hundreds of merit based awards and scholarships every year and advancing the professional interests of its members.
Its role is not limited only to the advancement of research and development in general. It also has key roles in accrediting various engineering and technical programs. As can be easily inferred, a program accredited by the IEEE is viewed with the utmost amount of respect everywhere in the world. It is part of the ABET – Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. It also provides support to the CSAB (Computer Science Accreditation Board) in the form of technical manpower and financial support.
Not only this, as already mentioned, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. never loses sight of the fact that technology should be used primarily to improve the quality of life and to promote general well being in the world. For this, it has a mandate which is followed religiously.
The IEEE is not only the leading ‘conglomerate’ of some of the best brains of the world in the field of engineering and technology, it is also a leading provider of resources and information in the fields of aerospace, electrical, electronics, computer, communication and bio engineering.
