TOEFL Exam

TOEFL or Test of English as a Foreign Language is an exam for all those aspiring students who wish to study in colleges in English speaking countries. The students need to pass this exam because they are from a non-native English speaking country.

This is an examination conducted by ETS (Educational Testing Service). It is very important that you score well in this exam to get admission in the college of your choice. The score is valid for two years. A higher score would assure you of admission in a good reputed college or university. The official website of TOEFL is www.toefl.org.

TOEFL Exam Format:

TOEFL has two formats namely CBT or computer-based test and PBT or paper-based test. Generally this exam is computer based but it can be taken on paper also and it is also quite advantageous in places where conduct of CBT is not possible. Both the formats have four sections namely, Reading Section, Writing Section, Listening Section and Speaking Section. The iBT or Internet Based Test has recently replaced CBT with some changes in the older format.

TOEFL Scores:

CBT and PBT, both test formats have different allocation of marks. We’ll discuss briefly about the allotment of marks in both the formats. In the Reading section CBT has been allotted 30 marks whereas PBT has been allotted 68 marks. In the Listening section also CBT has been allotted 30 marks and PBT has been allotted 68 marks.

In the Writing section CBT has been allotted 30 marks and PBT has been allotted 67 marks. In the last section of Speaking 30 marks have been allotted to CBT. IBT is taking over other two formats of the exam and in most of the places TOEFL is conducted in an IBT format.

TOEFL Preparation:

It is very important for a student to do well in this exam and also score high. A student can manage his preparation to achieve the desired results. There are many options available to a student for preparation. A student can get hold of good study material from the books available in the market.

“Barron’s How to Prepare for the TOEFL Essay”, “Kaplan TOEFL iBT with CD-ROM” and “Cambridge Preparation for the TOEFL Test” are some good books. You can log on to www.amazon.com for more information on TOEFL books.

You can also join a class or course for preparation. The institutes which run classes or courses prepare the students well for the exam. You can enroll yourself in any good institute. You can also join an online TOEFL prep course for preparation.

There are some websites which charge you for an online course while some websites offer free online courses. www.gettoefl.com is a website which offers online TOEFL courses and www.learn4good.com is a website which offers free online TOEFL courses.
