Virginia State University

The Virginia State University had its beginnings in 1882 and was called Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute. It was the first university to be fully supported by the state government and provide higher learning in form of four year education to the black population in the United States of America. The Virginia State University campus is located in a scenic landscape, next to the Appomattox River by the village of Ettrick.

The Virginia State University is very well connected to the rest of country and is commutation is easy by the interstate express. The campus of the University is spread over 236 acres. It has under it, in excess of fifty buildings and a 400 acre research facility for agriculture. The operating budget is healthy, in excess of $125 million a year. The endowments offered to the institution amount to nearly $14 million.

The University houses five schools within it with a school each for agriculture, business, technology, liberal arts, individualized studies and graduate studies. Financial aid is readily available for students wishing to study at the Virginia State University. Provost and Presidential scholarship is provided to meritorious students. The university has a program named the LIFTS, Low Income Families with Talented Students, which offers financial aid to students coming from low income backgrounds.

Talking about some figures, the population of the University is predominantly black, with them accounting for over ninety percent of the population. The female to male ratio is two is to one, thus, the student population is predominantly female. The university provides accommodation to nearly ninety seven percent of the students. Seventy percent of the students come from within the state itself. The athletic teams of the University call themselves the Trojans.

The University boasts of a rich list alumni including former United States Attorney General William H. Lewis and actor James Avery.  A vast range of activities forever take place at the Virginia State University. There are fraternities, sororities and clubs to bring like minded people together. Social events like sports meets, fundraisers and parties are held throughout the academic year. Academics and fun go hand in hand at the Virginia State University.
