What Is Required to Pursue MBA From Harvard

Harvard Business School was founded in the year 1908 with a mere strength of fifty nine students to its credit. The business school of Harvard University offers a two year full time MBA program. The two year degree program is divided in to two parts. The first part consists of the compulsory curriculum and the second part consists of elective curriculum.

In the following paragraphs we will take a close look at the subjects which are required to avail an MBA from Harvard.

Term 1 Courses

Finance I

This course has been designed to allow students of the first term to come face to face with the importance of finance in sustenance of the serviceable areas of an organization. Basics in financial management like how the right financial decision adds to the value of a firm. The topics which are covered include the basic analytic skills and principles of finance in a corporate world, various functions of the modern capital market and also the financial organization. Lastly, this paper offers students the opportunity to understand the techniques of analysis, cash flow valuation, risk analysis and capital budgeting.

Financial Reporting and Control

This part of the curriculum helps students to recognize accounting as the principal channel for the correspondence of data with respect to the economics of a business. The various aspects of this course allow students to avail a wider understanding as to how the financial management of an organization contributes to its growth.

Leadership and Organizational behavior

This part of the curriculum imparts leadership qualities in its students. The entire course has been divided in to three modules.

The first module examines teams and individuals on the pretext of determinants of group culture, managing performances of subordinates and establishing a productive and fruitful relation with peers.

The second module helps students to develop skills which would help them to construct a futuristic vision and align the goals of the organization for which they are working with this vision. This module also accesses the individual’s capability in motivating people to achieve those visions.

In the final module strategic career management processes get introduced.

Marketing

The main objective of this course is to reveal the responsibility which the marketing section of an organization needs to take. This paper also helps to analyze the relationship that exists in between marketing strategies and other functionalities of the company. Simple but important aspects as to how buyers need to be approached and how non trading aspect be converted in to a trading feature and maintain a stable and value added relationship with buyers for future leads. The skills which this paper is expected to inculcate in students pertain to the making of correct marketing decisions with respect to general management; have control over the various elements of marketing while maintaining a very cordial relationship with the customers and finally help in the evolution of the marketing strategies.

Technology and Operations Management

This curriculum helps in the understanding of the various skills and concepts which are needed to understand and act on the very smallest of the aspects which are important for the development and enhancement of services in an organization.

The course refers to topics like process analysis, information technology, product development along with cross functional and cross firm integration.

Term 2 courses

The second term courses have been based on the first term. The topics which are to be pursued for an MBA from Harvard are discussed in the following paragraphs.

BGIE: Business, Government and International Economy

This paper helps students to understand the economic environment and motivate the company’s functions accordingly. In fact this deals with some of the basic aspects of world economy like balance of payment accounting and national income, exchange rate theory and its implications, political regimes and an examination of the implications that these different regimes will have on the finances of the company. The paper also teaches the students the tricks of International trading, aspects that govern foreign trade and how they affect the profitability and productivity of a company.

Strategy

As the name suggests the main purpose of this course is to help students inculcate skills in them which would help them to formulate successful strategies for a company that would work for their productivity even when the economy is not at its best position.

The curriculum enables you to learn how to sustain competitive benefits and generate some loyal customers by making use of the various products of a company in a manner that the company’s optimum configuration gets highlighted. This paper also helps to ascertain skills in individuals that would balance opportunities and risks in the ever changing economy and use it in favor of the company’s growth and development.

The Entrepreneurial Manager

This course has been tailor made to help managers in facing issues and enabling them to identify opportunities and convert them in to viable organizational development strategies. The curriculum teaches students to identify and pursue an opportunity and grow the business in to a sustainable enterprise and help in the profitability of the organization.

Finance II

This imparts skills which would teach students to access complex investments execute financial policies and integrate the various financial decisions. The course has been divided in to four blocks of materials and is based on the skill that is developed in Finance I curriculum. These materials aim at the inculcation of three important managerial decisions namely evaluation, decision making and integration of the functions to support the financial decisions taken. The paper materials contain aspects of financial analysis, policy choices of firms and market imperfections which include costs that pertain to financial distress, taxes, agency conflicts etc.

Leadership and Corporate accountability

Finally, the most important skills that all managers must possess is the courage to take responsibility in difficult managerial decisions along with accountability of the critical role that a leader played in both the success story as well as the failure of a particular strategy.

All the above papers are compulsory and require a certain percentage of pass marks. While the main focus lies on the understanding of the basic principles there are also certain rules of the university that students have to follow to complete the full time two years course.

These are therefore the requirements which you need to full fill when pursuing MBA from Harvard.
